BUENOS AIRES, Feb 6 (AFP) - Cash-strapped South American champions Boca Juniors have turned down the opportunity to buy Japanese international striker Naohiro Takahara.
The club reported Wednesday that they were unable to sanction the 4million dollars fee when the 22-year-old Asian Cup winning striker joined the 2000 world club champions on loan last summer.
Takahara, whose departure was widely predicted after the Argentine side left him behind when they played Bayern Munich in the Inter-Continental Cup in Japan in December 2001, will return to his J-League club, Jubilo Iwata.
Iwata president Takanori Matsuzaki said at the weekend that the team faced problems including "unpaid wages due to inflation".
Boca Juniors signed Takahara from the J-League side last August in a 300,000 dollars loan deal with the option to buy to plug the gap after losing star striker Martin Palermo to Spain's Villarreal.
Takahara became the first Japanese player to appear in the Argentine championship but struggled to make any impact and only managed to find the net once in seven appearances.
