WASHINGTON, Jan 14 (AFP) - Bolivian star Marco Etcheverry signed a multi-year contract agreement with Major League Soccer on Monday, setting the stage for the 31-year-old midfielder to complete his career as the captain of D.C. United.
Etcheverry led United to MLS titles in 1996, 1997 and 1999 and won league Most Valuable Player honors in 1998.
"I am happy to have reached an agreement with MLS and to continue my playing career in the United States," said Etcheverry, second all-time in MLS with 86 assists.
Etcheverry started in all but three matches for United last year, leading the club in minutes played with 2,024. He provided a team-high 12 assists, but failed for the first time in his six-year MLS career to score a goal.
"This new deal should keep Marco in Washington for the remainder of his career," United technical director Dave Kasper said. "Marco has been the best player in MLS over the six-year history of the league and clearly, he's been the heart and soul of D.C. United."
The veteran player also has made 70 international appearances and scored 13 goals for Bolivia.
