¢º Germany Demolish Saudi Arabia 8-0 [06/01] [2002/06/02   ]

Sapporo, June 1 (Kyodo-Yonhap) -- Miroslav Klose bagged a hat trick as Germany demolished Saudi Arabia 8-0 in Sapporo on Saturday to take top spot in group E.

The performance by the Germans, which also saw Michael Ballack excel as midfield creator, will convince their doubters that the three-times world champions must be considered real contenders again this time.

Germany were superior in every department, dominating possession and creating scoring chances at will, and German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn was for the most part a spectator with an awe-struck Saudi side giving him almost nothing to do.

Klose bagged Germany's opening two goals and Ballack and Klose's partner up front Carsten Janker added one each to put Germany 4-0 up going into the break.

Klose then opened the scoring for Germany again in the second half and was followed by defender Thomas Linke, Oliver Beirhoff, who was brought on for Janker, and midfielder Bernd Shneider.

The victory hands Germany top spot in their group following the 1-1 draw between Ireland and Cameroon earlier in the day in Niigata.
