¢º Senegal Become Second Group A Qualifiers by Tying Uruguay 3-3 [2002/06/12   ]

Suwon, June 11 (Yonhap) -- Pape Bouba Diop scored twice Tuesday as Senegal held on to tie Uruguay 3-3 in their final Group A match, sending Victor Pua's team out of the World Cup.

After midfielder Khalilou Fadiga gave Senegal the lead in the 20th minute with a spot kick, Diop doubled the lead six minutes later and then beat Uruguay goalkeeper Fabian Carini in the 38th minute.

Uruguay, which squeezed into the finals with a playoff victory against Oceania champion Australia, got second-half goals from substitute Richard Morales and Diego Forlan.

The South Americans tied with Senegal with Alvaro Recoba's spot kick in the 88th minute, but it wasn't enough to knock off the Senegal squad, still riding high from their stunning opening match victory over defending champions France.

Tuesday's match allowed the World Cup newcomers to clinch second place in the group with five points. Senegal will fly to Oita in Japan to play the first place finishers of Group F on Sunday in a second round sudden-death match.
