Daejeon, June 14 (Yonhap) -- Poland salvaged its pride as they head home by breaking the Unites States side 3-1 in their last tournament match of the 2002 World Cup on Friday.
Regaining some of their flare that allowed the team to be the first to qualify for the FIFA championships in Europe, the Poles dominated the first half by scoring two goals in quick succession.
Emmanuel Olisadebe, who had usually been shut out from creating chances against Korea and Portugal, capitalized on a post-corner kick shuffle to put his team up 1-0.
The opening volley was followed two minutes later when striker Pawel Kryszalowics doubled the lead when a teammate passing the ball down range from a freekick shoves it into the near post past the Brad Friedel, the U.S. goalie.
For the remaining first half, the Team U.S.A. revealed none of the precise passes and speed that earned them four points coming into the match, and relied heavily on long range shots by Claudio Reyna, John O'Brien and Clint Mathis.
After the interval, Poland side again that struck in the 65th minute with a header by second-half substitute Marcin Zewlakow that hits the back of the U.S. net for the third time.
The Poles had a chance for another goal with a penalty kick 10-minutes later but lost the opportunity to the expert reflexes of Friedel.
The U.S. team then came back in the 82nd minute with a goal by Landon Donovan making it 3-1.
The U.S. lost several perfect chances late into the second half and were plagued by the same inability to score at the goal mouth which had been the problem for the Poles early in the championship.
Meanwhile, the U.S. side moved onto the second round of competition by managing four match points compared to the three garnered by Portugal, which lost 1-0 to Korea in Incheon.
The U.S. face Group G top finishers Mexico Monday in Jeonju.
